a deep and wide trench around the rampart of a fortified place (such as a castle) that is usually filled with water; a channel that may be used for confinement of animals in a zoo

城などの要塞の土塁の周囲に掘られた、深くて幅の広い溝で、通常は水が満たされている。動物園で動物を閉じ込めるために使われることもある水路。
