In the Edo period of Japan, a retainer was a vassal who provided military service to a lord in exchange for rice and a stipend. Retainers were also known as samurai. 

日本の江戸時代、家臣とは、米と禄と引き換えに領主に軍事奉仕する家臣のことでした。家臣は侍とも呼ばれていました。
